EXCLUSIVE: Spain’s Hottest Singer, Buika Heads to the U.S.

Spain’s Hottest Singer, Buika, Heads to the U.S.

Afro-Spanish singer Buika is kicking off a stateside tour this Friday in Chicago and if her last album, El Último Trago is any indication, she’s bound to unleash a torrent of raw emotion that will make you feel completely vulnerable. That’s the effect Buika has on everyone, including her good friend Pedro Almodóvar, who wrote the liner notes in the CD. We recently sat down with the 37-year-old songstress to talk lyrics, love and heartbreak. Here’s what she had to say:

Where do you find inspiration to compose?

From fear, happiness, love, heartbreak. I find inspiration in everything.

Even fear?

You can’t live in fear. Our fears are there for something. Let’s use them. For example, you can’t let the fear of heartbreak damage you. When you fall in love you walk towards someone else. Heartbreak is a return to loving ourselves. Hurt doesn’t kill, it educates. I don’t like to get hurt but I accept it.

You write and sing about very intimate matters. Is that hard?

I’m not scared about saying what I think. I live in a universe in which blame doesn’t exist. I don’t believe in being at fault; I believe in taking responsibility for your actions. If I do something wrong, I take responsibility for it. We’re all victims of victims. There comes a time when we have to be the best daughters, the best mothers, the best employees. It’s impossible. I don’t want to be the best at anything. I just want to be me.

The “you” that we've seen on stage is very passionate. How are you when you fall in love?

I have a very big conflict with the individualization of love. I feel like it’s egotistical to just love one person when you can love so many of them. I feel so much love that I declare myself a lover of all. I’m very passionate and very romantic with you all.

Do you ever suffer heartbreak?

I don’t hide from suffering. I hide from the thought of not being able to feel. I like to cry, laugh and feel every emotion.
